Relentless British 125 Championship

Team aim for Number 1 Plate in 2010

18.12.2009

Preparation for the 2010 British 125 Championship is well under way and after a very successful 2009 season rider Brian Clark and team owner Pete Banks are pleased to announce they will be back together again making a serious challenge to win the championship. Much hard work is going on with the bike at present being stripped down to the last nut and bolt. Also as some of you will already know both Brian and Pete are trying very hard to raise some sponsorship to make sure they have the best parts available in their quest to win the title.

Locally we have five new backers on board, The Widdrington Inn, HFF Groundworks and Drainage Ltd, Puffin Cruises Amble, Jubilee Caravan Storage Centre Ashington and PC Performance Bikes Dyno Centre Ashington who have kindly offered the use of their dyno to help set-up the new engine parts which will be a great help as serious testing on track is out of the question this time of year.

The push still goes on to find a title sponsor for the team but we feel with a few more smaller local backers we will be ready to fight for the title. If anyone can think of a company or individual who would like to be a part of this friendly team please pass this email on to them or ask them to phone Pete on 07762 428210 or contact him via the website at www.banksracing125.com

We are having some wall planners made with advertising space on them and again contact Pete if you would like to help and in return get a few planners and team news updates for a very reasonable outlay.

Matthew Paulo has moved on for 2010 but the team are looking to continue helping another young rider and make their path into top flight racing both a little easier and quicker.

Once again many thanks to our old and new supporters and finally it's time to wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Pete and Brian.

It has its ups and downs but being involved with the team is never boring. If you're interested, then contact us, our details are on the Contact Page.

Alternatively if you would like to contribute towards the financial cost of the running of our team we would welcome your help and in your return for a £50 or greater donation we will put your name on the side of the fairing where it will be seen by the spectators at the meeting and the television audience on British Eurosport. Simply click on the button below and decide how much you would like to help but feel free to give as much or as little as you wish.

Oulton Park

18.10.2009

Stunning win to end season for Clark & Banks Racing Team

Arriving at Oulton Park for the final round of the 2009 Relentless British 125cc Championship didn't inspire a large amount of confidence in Brian Clark for a good weekends racing as the circuit had never been kind to him in the previous years with some of the most unusual machine failures ever known to man, but having positive thoughts with his new team could out-weigh the demons of Oulton Park, Pete and the Banks Racing team set out to prove a point this weekend, which they did in fine style recording their second British Championship victory of the year.

Autumn had definitely arrived and it was a cool but dry Friday for free practice with Brian wasting no time getting on the pace posting the third & fourth fastest times in the two sessions. With a few minor adjustments the team hoped that qualifying would be the same, no such look though as heavy overnight rain meant the 9am Saturday morning session for first qualifying would be a very wet affair. Riding cautiously as it appeared that the weather would improve for final qualifying Clark slowly improved his time through the session albeit struggling to get any feedback from his bike. With only minutes of the session left he was down in 13th position and tried to push past the lack of bike feeling to post a reasonable time should the heavens re-open later in the day but as he entered the final right in the Knickerbrook Chicane the front wheel "tucked" skittling him into the gravel. Disgusted and annoyed Clark finished the session 13th. "During the whole session I couldn't get any feel from the bike and whether that was down to the cold conditions or the set-up I don't know but I just tried to bridge the gap to the front guys and away she went without a warning. Luckily it wasn't a big crash and we'll be ready for this afternoon but I am incredibly disappointed at that."

With conditions dry, bike repaired and rider calmer the final qualifying session got underway, the session had been reduced in time due to an earlier stoppage in the day so Brian opted to stay out for the for the whole session hoping to get some clear laps. From the off he was back on the pace and by mid-session was running second to Rob Guiver who had been fastest by more than a second all weekend but now his advantage was down to 0.8 seconds, inspired by this Clark pushed on and as he crossed the line to leave only his final lap the gap was down to 0.4 seconds. Knowing he needed a little more Brian just needed one more clean clear lap. Fastest in the first sector, then fastest in the second sector the team waited with baited breath wondering if he could hold it together for pole and although he caught a group of slower riders into the final turn he did it surpassing Guivers pole time by 0.4seconds. With the chequered flag already out the team were overjoyed but only for it to be cut short with Guiver re-taking pole spot by less than 0.2 seconds leaving Clark and the team second on the grid for Sunday's race. "Our first front row of the year is a good feeling and as we are huge 1.3 seconds faster than the third placed guy hopefully we can convert it tomorrow with a good race result. There were a few places that I know I can improve on but that's good enough and I'll just look to the race and hopefully go one better." Stated a much calmer than this morning Brian.

Race day and the turbulent weather returned. Morning warm up was a wash out but after that the weather improved slowly and the strong winds seemed to keep the rain at bay. As they lined up for the race Clark was hoping not to have a repeat performance of his Silverstone start which saw him drop to mid teens by turn one, that was not the case today and after a firm first lap he held second position behind Taylor McKenzie who had had a blistering start. Clark made quick work of Taylor as he wanted to be out at the front and to pull away if possible but Guiver had different ideas and block passed Clark into the final turn, Lodge corner, to lead on the second lap. Settling into a rhythm Clark was passed by Deane Brown on the fourth lap relegating him to third but with a small gap back to the next group he was comfortable to sit and watch the leading two and see where they were at their best. By lap 8 it was still the same at the front but Clark could see from his pit board signals that the following pack were starting to tip toe closer meaning it was time to try and bridge the gap to Guiver and up the pace, slicing past Brown Clark set about catching Rob and within a lap was 0.077 seconds off his tail and setting fastest laps in the progress. Guiver looked to up his pace but Clark got stronger drive out of the Cascades left hander onto the lower straight and holding a tight line into the fifth gear left hander of Island Bend he moved into the lead where he held strong for the remaining two laps to cross the line first and record his second win of the year.

"That was a good race and the win is excellent, especially here. As soon as I got a decent start I knew we could be somewhere near today. Rob was always going to be the man out at the front but I was confident I could run with him and beyond if need be. Deane coming through was a surprise to me though but he rode really well and the move he put on me to pass was first class, I'd of been proud to have done it. Obviously this is a great end to the year and apart from the broken arm that caused us to miss the two first rounds we've never been far off all season. I plan to be back next year with Pete at Banks Racing with a stronger package and we will definitely be going all out to lift the crown in 2010. I would like to thank everyone who has helped throughout the year and hopefully the four podiums we've had this season have brought everyone involved some enjoyment, it has been hard throughout financially and to all of those people who have repeatedly managed to help us I am eternally grateful. Fourth overall is a great achievement when you consider the level of equipment being used in this championship and Pete's meticulous preparation is a big factor in bridging that gap so he should be proud of the machine he has supplied me all year."

Work is already underway to ensure Brian and Banks Racing can be more competitive in 2010, if you've enjoyed following their progress this year and want to get more involved please contact them to find out more information. We need to upgrade some of the engine parts for 2010 and also get a pair of the lighter wheels all the other teams are using to stay competitive so if you can help, no matter how large or small please contact Pete, the details are on the Contact Page, or 07762 428210. or donations can be made via Paypal.

Many thanks to everybody and look out for more news soon.

Relentless British 125 Championship

Silverstone

01.10.2009

The penultimate round of the Relentless British 125 Championship was held at a sunny Silverstone and Brian Clark, rider for the Northumberland based Banks Racing & Xpress Racewear British Championship 125 team rode a very impressive race after a slow start that saw him complete the first lap in 12th place to finish a very creditable 5th place.

Friday's two twenty minute free practice sessions saw Brian sitting in 6th place. Feeling confident for Saturday's two qualifying sessions the best engine parts were fitted including a new piston assembly and Brian set off to do two steady laps to run everything in. Just as he started his first flying lap disaster struck with a very uncharacteristic engine seizure. Both Brian and team owner Pete Banks knew that all the settings and temperatures were correct leaving both baffled why this had happened. Following a strip down it was found the teams best JHA cylinder had cracked allowing water to spray onto the new piston causing the seizure. It was very bad news for the team as the cylinder and piston were now scrap. A hurried rebuild using old parts saw Brian back on track for the second qualifying where he did a great job of getting the bike on the second row. Some changes were made for Sunday's warm-up and another new piston was fitted and after again doing a couple of steady laps Brian finished the session fastest, not only fastest in warm-up but faster than the pole time set in qualifying the day before.

The bad start in the race was caused by being held on the line a little longer than usual allowing the engine temperature to get a little too hot. Without a doubt this cost Brian the chance of adding another win to his impressive results this year.

The final round of 2009, round twelve is at Oulton Park on 9th, 10th and 11th of October. The team is still looking for sponsors in any shape or form and would welcome even the smallest amount of help. You could help the team by visiting the website and donating via the Paypal button. Relentless British 125 Championship

Croft Autodrome

17.09.2009

Normal service resumed, well let's hope so!

After such a disappointment at Cadwell Park two weeks earlier Brian hoped that a trip to Croft, North Yorkshire for round 10 of the Relentless 125cc British championship would give him chance to prove that he could get back on the podium again. Croft is the teams home round and things didn't start too well because an after effect of the component failure at Cadwell Park caused a further cooling problem to the engine meaning Brian missed the first session of the weekend. All repaired Brian managed to complete the second free practice session and although already on the back foot due to missed track time managed to post the tenth fastest time of the day.

Keen to try and catch up on the missed session Brian was away first in Saturday morning's first qualifying session. With the teams second engine fitted to the bike after the cooling issues on Friday Brian was a little unsure what to expect but the bikes performance was as strong as always and after a few further suspension tweaks Brian took a full second of his best time ending the session in tenth overall. As the day progressed the weather improved further and for second qualifying the ambient temperature was a whopping 23.5 degrees. Still intent on improving Brian found a few tenths from the new tyres and after a late pit stop leaving time for just one flying lap he managed to put a lap together and finish sixth overall for Sundays race. "That was so nearly a bad session, traffic is so difficult to pass here that you really need a clear lap for a good time and I only got the one lap that was clear. We've got the bike turning a lot better and more stable under braking but I still feel I could go faster. The weather made it hard this afternoon with many not matching their morning times so I feel confident for tomorrow" Brian seemed happy with his afternoon performance and it looked as though he may have a little bit left still to come.

Sunday race day brought a change of weather and after two glorious days strong winds and grey clouds loomed above constantly threatening rain. As they lined up on the grid rain began to spit and it looked as though it could be another one of those days. As the lights went out Brian got an average start and although he lost a few places on the run to turn one he managed to out brake all of them to slot into fifth position. Just managing to narrowly avoid the first lap carnage which saw Danny Kent high side whilst in third place and take out fourth place rider Rob Guiver, then Martin Glossop crash out of the lead at the next turn Clark completed the first lap in second place although a little behind after the detours. The more difficult greasy conditions took a little getting used to but Brian soon found his rhythm and after three laps was out in the lead, in the safest place he thought. Unable to break the following group by half race distance Brian was running second in a six bike battle. Comfortable at the pace Brian judged where he was stronger and hoped to be able to make a move late race to convert his good form. More incidents followed but on the last lap it was Connor Behan from Clark. A pair of back markers at turn two left Brian a distant second to Connor but determined he reeled Connor in around the fast flowing turns and as they exited "Sunny out" he made his move passing Connor on the inside into the last section of the lap. Holding his line Clark looked to have but Connor ran even deep and forced his way up the inside into the next turn and kept his cool to take a much deserved victory, his first at that, well done him.

"I'm glad to be back at the front but however glad I am perhaps without the back markers it would of been a different result, but Connor just got through them and its all part of racing, maybe next time I'll be able to repay the favour. Today has been a good day though we've been strong throughout and the bike has worked fantastic in every aspect. The conditions weren't the best and I could have gone a lot faster around the back section but as poor Robbie Stewart found out the track wasn't good enough today. Obviously the result is not all down to me, the right people giving you the right advice make it possible and those people are Pete and Steven Banks, Steve Chambers and Pat Walsh at Dunlop so a MASSIVE thanks to them! The support from all of my team and sponsors is great so a Big thanks all round to you guys and I aim to go to Silverstone for some more of the same, well a little bit better if the truth be known. Fingers crossed and I'll see you there" Clark firmly announced.

Team-mate to Brian, Matthew Paulo suffered a huge and spectacular crash on Friday but despite a severe beating up and after many hours working late at night by Matthews dad Tom, Matthew was back on track on Saturday morning but the impact to the bike in the crash had been so huge the bike was plagued with minor problems through-out the remainder of the weekend.

Round 11 is at the Formula 1 circuit of Silverstone on the 25th to 27th September. The team is still looking for sponsors in any shape or form and would welcome even the smallest amount of help. Relentless British 125 Championship

Cadwell Park

07.09.2009

August Bank holiday meant for the annual trip to Cadwell Park, Lincolnshire and one of the team's favourite circuits, an interesting and exciting circuit that was renowned for throwing up a few surprises. Unfortunately for Brian and the Banks Racing team this was the case but only in the negative sense with mechanical failure on the grid putting pay to any chance of a finish this weekend.

Saturday started well and Brian was revved up to put in a good performance this weekend, the first free session went well and they posted the third fastest time, with slight adjustments Brian hoped to focus on keeping at the top of the time sheets but this was soon curtailed as he had a severe migraine and after resting between sessions could only manage tenth.

With the weather continually blustery conditions had not settled and as the first qualifying session started everyone looked to put in a strong performance in case a second opportunity didn't arise. Brian continued his strong form and mid way through the session was running third. After pitting for some slight adjustments Brian pushed on in search of a better time but as he began to make his improvements he came across a group of slower riders and with such difficulty to pass on the slender circuit finishing the session sixth. "That was frustrating, I had a good rhythm this morning but just kept catching the traffic through the woodland section. My first two sectors were really good and I was chasing down pole setter Rob Guiver and had caught him then we ran into the traffic and I lost 1.5 seconds over the woodland section to still match my best time. We were easily front row if not pole, but hopefully this afternoon will sort it."

The rain came just as second qualifying began and nearly all the riders opted not to bother going out with nothing to learn or gain.

With the weather restored to its best for Race Day morning warm-up gave the team chance to test the changes made for second qualifying which looked to be positive so it was just the long wait as the 125 race was the last of the day.

Determined to put an end to his podium drought Clark was fully focused on the job at hand but as he circulated on the sighting lap water began to pour from the radiator and instantly Brian knew what the problem was but also knew it couldn't be solved on the grid. In sheer desperation he lined up to take the start but the machined struggled to pull away and he dropped down to twelfth, determined he managed to get up to eighth but with the machine cutting out and performance seriously hindered it was a losing battle. When the race was stopped on the fifth lap for an accident Brian knew it was over and although he re took his place on the starting grid he didn't manage a lap in the re-start.

"Well that was as about as bad as it can get, the race today was for the taking quite easily and although anything can happen in racing we were 100% in with a shout for the win but racing changes so quickly and you just have to put up with it. The cylinder head insert has cracked causing water to get into the firing chamber, there's nothing anybody could have done and Pete is the most meticulous guy I know! Well we'll just have to do it all again when we get to Croft," said an upbeat but disappointed Clark.

Team-mate to Brian, Matthew Paulo collected another good haul of points and both Matthew and Brian lie 4th in their respective championships.

Round 10 is at the challenging Croft circuit near Scotch Corner in North Yorkshire on September 11th - 13th. To support the team and keep up to date with progress contact Pete, the details are on the Contact Page. or telephone 07762 428210.

Relentless British 125 Championship

Brands Hatch GP

19.08.2009

The Relentless 125 British Championship supporting the MCE British Superbike Series rolled into Brands Hatch for round eight this weekend and Brian and the team were hoping for a good performance to re-kindle their championship hopes as the fast flowing turns of Brands hatch are more suited to Brian's riding style.

With the clouds overhead Friday's first free practice was almost a non starter and it was more like a procession as the fog was content on hanging around making visibility very poor. It finally cleared for the afternoon and it was all go for a dry track session but as Brian arrived at the team awning things were not as needed and with a mechanical gremlin it meant the team had to sit out the session where all the other riders had the opportunity to test gearing and suspension set up for the Saturday morning first qualifying session.

The weather had settled for Saturday morning and was glorious and that's the way it stayed for the remainder of the weekend. Brian soon made up for his missed session though and was running a comfortable 6th mid-session but then had to pit with tyre trouble. Pat Walsh of Dunlop was on hand and with a few minor alterations Brian was back on track as times were suddenly improving pushing him down to 15th. With time remaining for only two flying laps Brian pushed as hard as he felt comfortable finishing up ninth overall.

"That wasn't too bad and only 0.1 seconds would have put us on the second row. The tyres had already done the Mallory race and we were hoping they would have been sufficient for this morning but now if the weather continues it may be too hot this afternoon to improve our time, but we'll try!" said an upbeat Clark. Second qualifying was held in the mid afternoon sun and although a lot warmer several riders improved including Clark who managed to clinch a second row start finishing seventh overall and only 0.7 seconds of pole. "That was a good session I made a small suspension change before the session and it was making the front of the bike chatter heavily through the fast turns but I was in a rhythm and wanted to complete the whole session as it will be hard in the hot sun tomorrow and stamina could play a part" Brian said after a mammoth 15 laps in the 28 degree sunshine.

From the second row Brian got an average start and crossed the line 6th with the front seven already breaking from the field. With Rob Guiver comfortable at the front it left the battle to run all race long for second to seventh. With several passes every lap the group seem to stretch and compact constantly with nobody having complete control. Slightly out of touch from the front of the group Clark pulled all of his resources together to keep in the picture and mid race tried to push forward cutting his way up to fifth on the road. With Glossop the next scalp Clark tried all he had to get past but sheer speed seemed to just make it impossible to put a move on him and we crossed the finish line an excellent fifth.

"Wow, what a race, the result could have been so much more and we were so close, which is encouraging. The bike performed really well and we were in very good company today, those bikes around us are heavily kitted in comparison so to be in touch right to the end is great. A few minor gearbox changes would have helped but missing Friday's session maybe cost us a podium today. I made a few errors on the last lap just trying to have a last push at Martin (Glossop) so was glad to keep Robbie (Stewart) at bay, the last thing I wanted today was to finish sixth again."

Team owner Pete Banks said, "The pace was really fast today, in last years race the winner lapped at 1 minute 36 seconds, this year Brian did a 1 minute 34.9 which was faster than the race winner this year. The race was close with six riders all scrapping for second place. There are a few areas where we could improve the bike for Brian and we are searching for a bit more help so we can do just that. If you would like to help check out the website www.banksracing125.com where you can make a donation via PayPal or contact me on 07762 428210 or by email. Once again many thanks to all those who are already involved with the team."

Brian's team-mate 16 year old Matthew Paulo was unlucky not to score points in both championships when he had to retire from the race with an over heating engine.

Round 9 is at Cadwell Park, Lincolnshire Bank Holiday weekend 29th - 31st August. To support the team and keep up to date with progress come and see us or check out the website.

Relentless British 125 Championship

Mallory Park

27.07.2009

Mallory Park in Leicestershire was the venue of the seventh round of the Relentless British 125 Championship and both team riders came away with another good haul of points. Brian Clark on board the Banks Racing/Xpress Racewear Honda brought his bike home in 6th place that could have been a challenge for third but for riders falling of right in front of him forcing him and Shaun Horseman to take avoiding action and this meant he was unable to challenge Tim Hastings at the end of the race for a spot on the podium. A cracked frame in qualifying had kept Brian down on the third row meaning he had a bit of work to do before he was in a challenging position.

Matthew Paulo again had a good weekend scoring points in both the main Relentless British 125 Championship race with a fine ride to twelveth place and a great 4th place in the ACU Academy Cup class.

Brian Clark currently lies fifth only one point from 4th place in the main championship and Matthew Paulo lies 4th in the Academy Cup class and eighteenth in the main championship so both riders are doing well and had Brian not broke his arm at Round one forcing him out of two rounds he would most likely have been challenging for second place. There are still another five rounds to go and 125 points available so there is every chance that Brian and Matthew can get much further up their championship tables.

Next round is at the fast long GP circuit of Brands Hatch on 7th 8th and 9th August which is a favourite of both riders and we look forward to Brian and Matthew doing well and both have said they will be doing their best to get on the podium again.

The team would like to thank all the companies and individuals who have offered support in what at the moment are troubled times for all disciplines of motorsport. Without you we could not be challenging for race wins and you are all very much appreciated. We still need more sponsors to enable us to continue at this high level and welcome help no matter how small from anyone interested and there is still plenty of room to advertise on both the bike and the race truck.

A big thank you to: Dunlop, NGK, Nuvo Helmets, Parris Print, Xpress Racewear, Tradeck Ltd, Amble Auto Services, Dtec, Telford Rewinds, Regina Chains, Chase. Accident Repairs Sovereign Motors

Relentless British 125 Championship

Knockhill

09.07.2009

Round six of the Relentless British 125 Championship supporting the British Superbike was held north of the border at Knockhill Racing circuit near Dunfermline, Scotland at the weekend where Brian Clark onboard the Xpress Racewear supported Banks Racing Honda salvaged a sixth position after making life difficult for himself all weekend.

Brian last visit to the compact Scottish circuit had been in 2006 so free practice was to refresh his memory although it seemed like he had never forgot the place and after the first session had posted the fourth fastest time, a 55.50 second lap, very respectable beginning. The weather had turned by second free practice and the constant drizzle made it worthless to attempt a good time.

In first qualifying Brian could only match the time he managed so easily in the first session of the weekend and with others improving this left him 9th but with the afternoon session still to come and the weather staying fine. The team hoped that the small changes made could improve the time and get closer to Brian's best ever lap around the circuit of 54.10 secs. In a very busy second session Brian struggled to improve on the mornings time and only toward the end of the session did he begin to make progress improving to a 55.26 secs lap but it wasn't enough and with the session cut short due to an incident it left the team down in 14th and on the fourth row of the grid for Sunday's 20 lap race.

"I can't yet pin point what is stopping me from improving, I am a long way off the times I know I can do and with this circuit being so difficult to pass and being 14th for tomorrow's race is just going to make it so hard to get a result this weekend, it's a long way to come for nothing! We'll have a look through all the data and hopefully between Pete and myself we can come up with something to give us more of an edge" a frustrated Clark said after a hard day.

With gearbox internals changed and a few other minor adjustments Brian matched his time in a shortened morning warm up and things looked like they could improve for the race. But once again Brian decided to make it hard for himself and the team with an exceptionally poor start to the race leaving him down in the mid-twenties after the first corner. Frustrated and disappointed a great first lap brought him back to 14th as they crossed the line and with 19 laps to go Brian set about in his normal determined way to make something of the days race. Battling hard Brian managed to pull up to the group fighting for 6th position and after a few laps was deep in the battle slowly moving forward, a mistake by championship leader Glossop made the battle for 5th and whilst Brian was still struggling to settle on his machine he managed to get to the front of the group and began chasing down fourth place man Robbie Stewart. Time was running out and back markers were beginning to make things difficult allowing the chasing group to catch Clark. With only 2 laps to go championship leader Glossop got past by Brian and further back markers made it difficult allowing Deane Brown by also. Determined to get the best result possible for the day Clark kept his cool and out of the hairpin for the final time passed Brown but just could not make it past the KRP machine of Glossop crossing the line 6th.

"That wasn't too bad considering the head start I gave everybody. We have a few things to try on the bike for the next round but I need to get my qualifying sorted. We should have been front-runners this weekend but instead I've allowed myself to slip further away from the Championship lead, I won't let it happen again. Consistency is what's needed and 6th is not where I need to be. I'm grateful to the team, they all wanted a good result and I'm sorry I haven't been able to supply this weekend but it was a good race and I look forward to seeing the highlights Thursday night on Eurosport Two. Local round Mallory Park is next so I will have to put in a performance that really counts, I want to be Champion so from here on in its got to be perfect every round." said Clark dejected but positive as always.

Pete and Brian would like to say a big thank you to all those that are supporting the team in these difficult times.

Round 7 Mallory Park is July 17th to the 19th with live TV coverage from 2pm on Sunday 19th on Eurosport Two. If you're interested, then contact us, our details are on the Contact Page.

Relentless British 125 Championship

Snetterton

27.06.2009

The Fifth round of the 125cc British Championship which supports the British Superbike held at the ultra high speed circuit of Snetterton this weekend where Brian Clark on board the Banks Racing/Xpress Racewear Honda managed a sixth position in a hard fought battle. With the KRP machines noted for their exceptional top speed it was deemed as perhaps the most difficult event on the calendar and the team knew it would have to be another perfect weekend if we were to upset the apple cart again. Friday free practice came and went and with constant changes we managed to stay somewhere near the front in sixth position. Strong winds had hampered any real chance to find a perfect set-up but with new rubber from Dunlop Motorsport and a few words of encouragement from Pat Walsh and his team Brian was confident of improvements in the morning.

Saturday's opening qualifying session began with Brian having to run-in new engine parts so the first few laps were steady then he began picking up the pace. Moving straight onto the front row with his first flying lap and then improved again every time round for 5 laps, Brian then pitted for adjustments. Changes made and out again he went hoping for some traffic to gain a slipstream down either of the two long straights, as always Brian managed to avoid anyone able to assist in this but still managed to post a time good enough for 5th position, just off the front row.

"When I pitted mid-session I saw Martin with the board showing P2, the time I had done wasn':t fantastic and I knew I could improve when back out there, but just never found a gap in the traffic so I'm a little disappointed that I could only find a few more tenths, but 5th is a good start and hopefully a few more changes for second qualifying and we'll make the front row", a satisfied but eager for more Clark said after the session. With a weather change later in the day second qualifying didn't allow for any improvements and 5th was the grid position for Sundays race. Disappointed of not being able to improve his times Brian focused on morning warm-up for his chance to test the new settings for the race. They seemed better, however the overnight rain had removed most of the grip from the circuit and as he entered the fast left hander (90mph) off the back straight the front lost grip and down he went. Shocked he attempted to re-mount but the damage was too severe.

The lights went out and the crash was forgotten, it looked like a good start but then Brian ran deep into turn one and in turn losing drive up to turn two. This little error cost him dearly and down the back straight he was pushed back to twelfth. With it all to do Brian set about cutting through the field but with the slipstream effect could not easily break the group and could only watch as the leaders slowly pulled away. Determined he finally got out of the battle and was now lying sixth chasing championship leader Martin Glossop and hoping to gain a few extra points. With a lap to go Brian was in striking distance but a small mistake through the turn he had fell at earlier in the day but paid to it and he settled for sixth. The first non KRP machine home"

"Now that wasn't what I was hoping for, the first turn error has cost me dearly and I knew that I would get caught up in a slipstream battle. It's true we only gave one point away to the Championship lead but we've dropped to fifth overall with the KRP boys at the front today. This was always an uphill battle and I must be grateful to be as close to them at such a circuit, Knockhill is next and I am looking forward to the challenge” a dejected Brian said after the race. "Many thanks to all those who came so far to support me and also those who make it possible each week, Xpress Racewear, Pete & Steven at Banks Racing, Tamworth Yamaha, On Two Wheels Distribution, DTEC, Proppa.com, NGK, Dunlop Motorsport, Derek at Tradeck Ltd, Steve at Chase Accident Repairs and the latest additions, Telford Rewinds & Alan Morris Vehicle Repairs." said Brian.

Round Five is at Knockhill in Scotland from 3rd - 5th July. If you're interested, then contact us, our details are on the Contact Page.

Relentless British 125 Championship

Thruxton

03.06.2009

Round Four of the Relentless 125cc British Championship, supporting the British Superbikes was held at Thruxton this weekend in glorious sunshine where Brian Clark on board the Banks Racing Honda celebrated his first race win of the year, following on from last weeks third place at Donington Park, Clark now lies third in the Championship even after missing the first two rounds due to injury. But it wasn't all smiles and laughter at Thruxton!

As the team arrived at Thruxton the 125 paddock was already alive with talk that they were going to be the benchmark for the weekend and Brian would be the man to beat. After Free practice nothing could have looked any further from the truth! Pete had several engine set-ups to try and coupled with Brian's performances the team were off the pace down in 13th. The information gained had been beneficial and positives were drawn in ready for qualifying next morning.

The bike was much improved but it appeared Brian was still missing his edge and after Q1 the team provisionally lay 7th overall and on the second row of the grid. A few minor changes were made and as conditions stayed stable throughout the day the team looked for an improvement. It came but it wasn't enough and after the second 30-minute session Brian finished 11th overall and would start Sunday's race from the third row of the grid.

“Nothing has clicked for me today I've not been concentrating well and have not even come across anybody at the same kind of pace to help me focus. I also chose not to use any new rubber today as I was not at my best and it would of been a waste which doesn't help but Pat at Dunlop Motorsport has been very supportive even if I've not earned him any money today and assures me that tomorrow I'll be right there, so hopefully he's right and I'm wrong!” said a deflated Brian.

Race day came and after having time to analyse his failings from yesterday Brian rushed out for morning warm-up finishing second fastest and eclipsing his qualifying time by 0.25seconds still using the old rubber. Spurred on by this performance the team made some serious but suitable changes in preparation for the race.

As the lights went out it was Round Four on its way and after a strong start Brian finished the first lap in sixth position. With three laps gone it was Glossop, Hastings and Clark who had broke the tow of the group and pulling away. Fighting every lap, positions changed at the front and although Brian was stronger around the fast flowing back section of the circuit he was unable to break from the KRP riders and they drew him back down the long straight every lap. Exciting at every turn this battle raged to the end and as the final lap started it was Glossop from Clark from Hastings. Nose to tail for the lap it all came down to the last chicane, Hastings was inside Clark but not firmly enough to hold the line and Clark shut the door whilst trying to get as close to Glossop hoping for a chance and then it came. Glossop ran into the chicane too hot trying to avoid being overtaken and clipped the kerbs firing him out of the seat and out of control. Trying to avoid Glossop's antics Clark ran as close to the kerb as possible and drove the Banks Racing/Xpress Racewear machine hard and strong to the line ensuring Hastings had no option but second.

Elated and overjoyed Clark had won in only his second ride of the year at a circuit where the statistics heavily outweighed such an outcome. “That was awesome, it was tooth and nail all the way and to still be there at the end is a huge credit to us. Pete & Steven Banks gave me the best machine they could and I just rode like I know I can and finally it seems like a little bit of luck came our way. I'm glad Martin (Glossop) didn't hurt himself but I can't hide how happy I am today. Chris at Xpress Racewear has been so supportive and hopefully this is the start of me repaying his belief in me, without him we'd not be on the grid. Also a big big thanks to all that have helped me to get here. As I'm not yet 100% fit nor are we to full strength as a team so there's more to come from us, watch this space. From these results and the fantastic coverage on the Eurosport programmes hopefully we can convert this into more support to try and bridge the gap to the KRP team and the others.” said a somewhat satisfied Brian.

Team owner Pete Banks was delighted to see Brian get back on the podium only a few days after his 3rd place at Donington and would like to thank all those that have offered some support to this small friendly team. “All branches of motorsport are suffering at the moment and I would love to hear from anyone who would like to help out and keep my team on the grid for a while yet. There are several advertising options available so please get in touch if you can.” said Pete

Matthew Paulo will be back in action at Snetterton after missing Thruxton to concentrate on his exams and will be hoping to go one better after his brilliant 2nd place in the Academy Cup at Donington.

Round Five is at Snetterton, Norfolk from 19th - 21st June. If you're interested in helping our team then contact us, alternatively if you want to donate something then click on the donate button on the index page. Our contact details are on the Contact Page.

Relentless British 125 Championship

Donington Park

27.05.2009

Grateful to be fit is an understatement as Brian left the medical centre on Saturday morning all signed off a free to ride. To be out in Free practice was just a relief but he managed to post some reasonable times and although we are two full rounds behind everyone else we ended the day 3rd fastest. With expectations high Brian tried not to disappoint and stayed in the top 4 right up to the end of the first qualifying session and only the fact that Brian caught a slower rider into Coppice then a pair into the Fogarty Esses on his best lap meant we missed out on a provisional front row place by only 0.110 of a second. Satisfied but sure we could improve with new tyres and more minor changes were made in an attempt to try and make the bike perform how Brian would like it to for the second qualifying session. The weather was at its best for second qualifying, very still and more than 20 degrees. The changes were not what the team had hoped for and after a frustrating session Brian was left in 9th position on the grid for Monday's race.

"I'm a little disappointed from today's result, we had the pace this morning and easily would have been front row if it was not for the traffic but the bike's just not as I want it to be yet and the changes we made just didn't work and hindered the bike mid turn slowing me further for Q.2. Trying to catch up on two missed rounds of riding is difficult in just two sessions but we have a few ideas and hopefully by tonight we'll be more confident for the race" an upbeat Brian said after a long day in the sun. The weather warned of a change for rain but the morning was dry giving us the chance to try the adjustments made over night. Instantly it felt better and in only 5 laps Brian matched his second qualifying session time, giving the team hope for the race.

The lights went out for the start of the race and everybody surged forward, everyone that is except Brian, he'd 'fluffed' the start leaving him down in 26th as he exited the first turn. Three laps later he had battled up to 9th and was making good progress on the leading group as they battled away. Then the heavens opened bringing out the red flags and an uneasy feel in the Banks camp. Had all that hard work been a waste? The rain passed and everybody lined up on wets as it looked like more could come at any time. Unbelievably Brian 'fluffed' the start again leaving him 20th this time but as they came round to complete the first lap of the shortened 7 lap race, Brian had battled up to fourth and in between the KRP riders, two laps later he took the lead and began to pull away, but it wasn't over and with awkward conditions Brian looked fast but the KRP machines caught him leading to a 4 way battle for the lead until Tim Hastings slid out of contention at the Melbourne loop. With only a lap to go and a 6 second gap on the next group Brian kept his cool and whilst giving the front two enough space to battle it out he lay in wait to pounce should either make a mistake, finally finishing this very exciting race third!

"It's been a long time coming this, yes it would have been great to of pushed for the win but having had to suffer 6 weeks with a broken arm and two weekends of not competing today was just about getting some points on the board. Next week we'll be stronger and I'll be more focused, and hopefully by then I will have had chance to practice my starts! With team mate Matt Paulo finishing 7th too it's been a great weekend for the Banks Racing Squad! Obviously I'm grateful to everybody who's helped to make this possible either financially or physically but there's still a long way to go but let's hope that with performances like this it may help make it easier. My biggest thanks go to Pete Steven and Alan at Banks Racing, Chris at Xpress Racewear, Jon & Lisa at Tamworth Yamaha, Martin on the board and my lucky mascot's my wife Stacey & son Owen. A special thanks must go to Toby Branfoot, BSB Medical Director for easing the pain in the wrist for race day! Roll on Thruxton in four days" said a reasonably satisfied Clark.

Easter Weekend

14.04.2009

Annoying injury delays start until Oulton Park

For first practice Brian was a little apprehensive, he had tested the bike but this was to be his first outing for nearly two years at BSB and his first with all the new faces that seemed to be flying whilst out testing in Spain. Brian took it steadily, after all the race was still three days away and a lot can happen in that time, as it did. He finished the first session in a creditable 6th place.

A drizzly afternoon followed and we opted to miss the session as the weather looked as it would improve for the morning. It didn't so for Saturday morning we fitted the wets and went for a ride around just in case this was what we had to look forward to for the rest of the weekend. Result, Brian was quickest in the session even with a fogging visor, so things looked to be on track!

With the weather improving the last free practice session was almost completely dry. Again Brian just continued to circulate to build on his pace and learn about the machine a little more in readiness for qualifying. He was running in the top five and had just moved up to second quickest when he entered Paddock Hill bend and passed another rider late and had to tighten his entry line just running close to the damp part of the circuit, as he came back to the throttle to exit the turn the rear tyre gave a small slide bringing Brian out of the seat, he instantly shut the throttle to save it as he had done so many times before, unfortunately the rider he had just passed was so close he clipped the rear of the bike sending Brian over the bars and down the very steep gradient at Paddock Hill. Dusty and dazed he limped back to the team awning but pain from his arm and ankle meant a trip to the medical centre was needed.

Brian was met at the Medical centre by the eager team led by the ever happy Toby Branfoot, who suggested an X-ray and then both Toby and Ruth Kinghorn, the radiographer informed Brian that the radius bone had snapped. A quick local anaesthetic and Toby had manipulated it back into place and with a back slab was sent on his very disappointed way, with the mention of at least six weeks away from racing, not what he was hoping for on his return.

Things could be worse as few others did not have a perfect weekend and there are still another eleven rounds to make amends as long as the bone repairs in three weeks.

Brian said, "I must say a big thank you to everyone who wished me well, it was much appreciated. Also thank you to the medical staff, a first class service although I hope not to need it again soon. Finally Pete and his team and my sponsors have all been very supportive and I'm only sorry I couldn't give them what they deserved this weekend but we'll make amends next time out, a promise".

Round Two of the 125cc British Championship is at Oulton Park, Cheshire 2nd to 4th May. It has its ups and downs but being involved with the team is never boring. If you're interested, then contact us, our details are on the Contact Page.

Clark completes positive Pre-season testing

24.03.2009

Banks Racing rider Brian Clark completed his pre-season testing for the 2009 125cc British Championship with a very positive final outing at Oulton Park. Although not one of Brian's favourite circuits the day went exceptionally well with the main focus being on new front Forks and their settings & fine tuning of the machine's base settings. A full day of dry track time was just the ticket and Brian made fantastic progress lapping consistently at times that would have put him at the sharp end of the grid last year, even more impressive when you consider the heavy circuit traffic that he had to cope with regularly.

Oulton Park is a circuit with such a variance of turns that you can get a real feel for how the bike can perform. We have been able to improve well today without any major changes to the bikes engine and this is where the biggest gains are still to come from. My main focus today was to get to the times needed on a "nearly right machine" rather than looking for a perfect set-up. With the first round at Brands Hatch only two weeks away we can look forward to it with "great anticipation" Brian commented. "I also had the opportunity to have a run out in my new Factory looking Spidi Leathers and try the latest Chest & Back protector", all kindly supplied by Spidi Super Centre, Tamworth Yamaha. Firstly they are like a second skin as always but also looked the part and created a lot of interest from all the other riders there today.

Team owner Pete Banks enjoyed the successful day and was very pleased with the outcome giving him a very positive feeling for the season opener in just over two weeks, hopefully this is the year!

Round one of the 125cc British Championship is at Brands Hatch, Kent 10th -13th April. Relentless British 125 Championship

Supporting the British Superbike Championship

28.02.2009

Banks Racing team rider Brian Clark from Wimblebury, Staffordshire made his debut aboard the Banks Racing RS125 Honda at a cool but dry Mallory Park last Sunday. Brian took part in five practice sessions completing sixty laps of the demanding Leicestershire track and both Brian and the team left the track with a positive attitude and look forward to some more testing before the first round of the Relentless British 125cc Championship. Brian said "Firstly it's good to be back out there and from just this short test it's clear that the bike has all the potential it needs to cause a few upsets to the form book this season".

Brian's team-mate 16 year old Matthew Paulo from Glasgow missed the Mallory test as he had been testing at the Spanish circuit of Cartagena and his bike was still enroute on it's way back from Spain. Matthew enjoyed several days' testing in good weather but was left bruised and battered after crashing at over 100 mile per hour but after dad Tom repaired the bike a very sore Matthew made the most of the time left and continued with his testing programme.

Brian will complete further testing at either Donington or Brands Hatch while Matthew returns to Spain next week to continue development of his RS125 Honda.

If anyone can offer any help and support to Banks Racing during what is going to be a most difficult time for all branches of sport please contact Pete Banks via the website, email or call him on 07762 428210 any time.

Rider line up for 2009

Happy New Year to everybody. Team Owner Pete Banks would like to thank everyone who showed interest in riding for the team this year and said making a decision with so many deserving riders interested has been one of the hardest he had ever had to make.

Banks Racing is pleased to announce their rider line-up for 2009. Brian Clark from Staffordshire returns to the 125 class after an 18-month break from racing. "This is the first time I have been in a team rather than running myself and I am looking forward to only have to concentrate on the riding for a change. I have the utmost respect for Pete Banks and data technician Alan Green and I am really excited to see what their knowledge and experience can give me and look forward to the fun, fast times ahead" quoted Brian who qualified on the front row six times and gained a win and two second places in 2006 and finished 4th in the championship.

Joining Brian will be 16 years old Matthew Paulo from Glasgow. Matthew is a student at Merchiston Castle School. After winning two Minimoto Championships in 2006 he competed in the Thundersport 125 Superteen series winning the final round at Donington in October 2008. Matthew is the current KDMC Scottish 125 Champion. Matthew said "I am very much looking forward to riding with a recognised team and I am very excited at the prospects for the coming year and would like to say thanks to Pete for giving me this chance"

Testing will begin in the next few weeks and we will shortly be able to announce our sponsors and supporters and if any one would like to be part of this exciting line up for 2009 please contact Peter on 07762 428210 or via the website.
